After spending three seasons as a backup running back in San Francisco, Mason was traded to the Vikings before the 2025 season to form a committee with Aaron Jones Sr. Mason was a sneaky sleeper pick, but he was not able to take over the starting job. The Vikings are releasing Jones in the offseason, leaving Mason as the lone back before the 2026 NFL Draft. What is Jordan Mason’s dynasty outlook in 2026 and beyond?
Mason’s best season with the 49ers was in 2024, when he was the starting running back after Christian McCaffrey went down with a preseason injury. He was traded to the Vikings before the 2025 season with expectations that he would eventually win the starting job over Jones. However, that did not happen, and Mason was a disappointing mid-round fantasy pick, finishing as the RB36 in PPR leagues. In the final ten weeks, Mason only had two games in which he scored over double-digit fantasy points.
According to KeepTradeCut, a website that crowdsources dynasty values from players who use the site, Mason is the RB55. He is in the same range as other backup running backs, such as Kimani Vidal, Ollie Gordon, Sean Tucker, and Tank Bigsby. However, most of these other running backs are stuck behind Hampton, Achane, Irving, and Barkley, while the door is open for Mason to be the clear starter in Minnesota, depending on how the NFL Draft goes. Mason is worth a late-second round pick in rookie dynasty drafts.
2026 will be Mason’s second year of his contract extension with the Vikings, and he will be making $5.79 million this season. He will be an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
At the moment, Mason is the starting running back for the Vikings. However, they will bring in some help to the running back room in either free agency or in the Draft. I don’t expect them to sign any big-name free agent running backs, such as Kenneth Walker III or Breece Hall. Their free agent money is going to go to another quarterback, such as Kyler Murray. I do expect the Vikings to draft a late-round running back to pair with Mason. The Vikings showed their trust in Mason by trading for him before last season and then by releasing Jones, who had a decent 2025 season. They want Mason to be their guy in 2026. As long as they don’t draft a running back in the early rounds, Mason will be their starting running back this upcoming season.
I would be looking to buy Mason in dynasty leagues ahead of the 2026 season. He is going for cheap in dynasty right now, and the other running backs ranked around him have no path to being a starter. As fantasy managers start to react to Jones’ release, Mason’s stock and ranking will go up as the offseason goes on. I would want to buy Mason before that jump happens, and would be looking to trade a third-round pick in exchange for Mason.
