Josh Allen gives odd answer about how much he'll play in the preseason
Shawn Dowd/Rochester Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK

The first preseason game is like scratching an itch you haven't been able to reach for days. It might not completely get rid of the itch, but it's oh so satisfying.

Seeing football back on the field for your favorite team is a wonderful feeling, even if the first preseason game typically involves plenty of guys that are way down the depth chart. Fans typically want to know when they'll see their favorite players on the field, and there's nobody on the Buffalo Bills roster that draws more eyes than Josh Allen

Josh Allen gives an odd answer when asked if he's going to play in the preseason

Typically, you'd expect a super star starting quarterback to know the plan for preseason action. Allen doesn't seem to be looped in on those plans at this point though.

When Allen was asked to evaluate the offseason that Mitch Trubisky has had, he began speaking about the work that he and Shane Buchelle have put in.

"It'll be fun to see them in action in the preseason, I'm not sure how much I'm playing, if I'm playing at all, I guess we'll find out, but I know that they will be and I'm very excited to see them and see them perform at a high level," Allen said.

If Allen isn't sure yet if he's going to be getting starter minutes at all this preseason, let alone for their first preseason game against the Chicago Bears in three days, then it's pretty safe to assume that he'll at least be sitting out this first matchup.

Allen has appeared in every preseason outside of one

Aside from the COVID year in 2020, Allen has appeared in each of his other five NFL preseasons, so if the plan is for Allen not to participate this year, that would be a pretty substantial deviation from his previous plans.

Last year, Allen appeared in two preseason games to get a little rust off. In those two matchups, he attempted 17 passes, completing 12 of them. Preseason stats don't matter, but it would seem like an interesting choice for Allen not to suit up in this year's shortened preseason, which is now only three games.

Of particular interest, Bills Mafia should want to see Allen on the field with a new-look offense. It's safe to say that Allen will likely need reps to familiarize himself not only with a new offensive gameplan with Joe Brady being promoted to the full time offensive coordinator, but also to continue to build report with his new pass catchers.

The chemistry between Allen and rookie training camp standout Keon Coleman continues to flourish, but those two can use as many reps as possible to get on the same page before the games start counting next month.

Add in veteran pass catcher Curtis Samuel, who joined the Bills in free agency, and there is plenty of rapport that still needs to be built. It remains to be seen if Allen will take the field this preseason, but I would be surprised if he doesn't.
