Josh Allen did not hide his frustration after the Buffalo Bills suffered their first loss of the season Sunday.

The Bills fell 29-26 to the New England Patriots at Highmark Stadium, dropping Buffalo to 3-1 while giving a division rival an important victory.

Allen acknowledged the significance of the loss afterward, emphasizing how costly a defeat against a fellow AFC East team can become later in the season.

“These ones sting. The division ones sting. It feels like it’s really a two-game swing.”

Allen finished the game 23-of-33 passing for 253 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown, but an interception to Patriots safety Craig Woodson became one of the costly mistakes in the game.

The Bills also lost a fumble, while New England finished with 405 total yards compared to Buffalo’s 340. The Patriots controlled the ball for more than 33 minutes and converted five of 12 third downs.

Buffalo entered the matchup at 3-0 and had a chance to strengthen its position atop the AFC East. Instead, New England moved to 2-2 and narrowed the gap in the division.

The loss also showed how little room Buffalo has for mistakes against its division opponents. The Bills will face the Patriots again later in the season, giving Allen and his teammates an opportunity to respond.

For now, though, Allen understands the setback carries more weight than an ordinary regular-season loss. Buffalo remains atop the AFC East, but the margin has become considerably smaller.

The Bills will need to clean up the turnovers and defensive issues quickly. With their perfect start gone, Allen knows every division game will carry added importance from here on out.
