Josh Jacobs Remains the Engine of the Packers’ Offense

Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love continues to garner recognition as the leader of the Packers. However, running back Josh Jacobs serves as the focal point of the Packers’ offense, which is ranked ninth in yards per game this season. Love’s improvement from last season is notable, but the Packers’ offense lives or dies based on Jacobs’ performances.

Jacobs’ criticality is apparent when looking at the Packers’ first five games of the 2025 season.

Green Bay is off to a successful start with a record of 3-1-1, and the offense has managed to score 27 or more points in four of five games. In their lone loss, on the road against the Browns, the Packers were only able to manage 10 points. Jacobs rushed for 1.9 yards per carry that game and failed to reach the end zone for the only time this season.

Simply put, when Jacobs struggles, the Packers struggle.

Over-Performing While Under the Weather

Green Bay pulled out a win over the Cincinnati Bengals in a Week 6 contest immediately following the team’s bye week. Jacobs was responsible for 150 yards on 23 touches, while also accounting for two touchdowns.

Jacobs’ Week 6 performance was his most efficient of the season despite reports of getting sick “before, during, and after” the game.

While a regular season win over a non-conference opponent is great, Jacobs’ “flu game” says more about his role as a leader. The Packers are a young team that benefits greatly from the presence of veteran players like Jacobs.

Tough Test Coming

The Packers’ offense is at their best when Jacobs is successful on the ground. That notion will be further put under a microscope, as the Packers will be tested over the course of the next three weeks.

Green Bay’s next three matchups are against teams ranking in the top half of the league in rush defense. The Cardinals, Steelers, and Panthers all will aim to slow down Jacobs and the Packers offense.

Green Bay needs to find success during this stretch of game before starting the back half of their schedule, which is loaded with divisional matchups and playoff caliber teams.

Jordan Love has proven capable of exceptional performances. The Packers have plenty of weapons with Tucker Kraft, Matthew Golden, and Romeo Doubs each turning in marquee performances in recent weeks. The impending return of injured receivers Christian Watson and Jayden Reed leaves fans with a surplus of optimism.

But establishing Josh Jacobs remains the key to unlocking the full potential of the Green Bay offense. The Packers must make sure he continues to find success.
