Josh McCown wants to follow similar path to Jeff Saturday into coaching

Former quarterback Josh McCown would like to follow in the footsteps of Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday.

"I love being part of teams and being part of a group," McCown said about eventually becoming a coach during the "AP Pro Football Podcast" (h/t Rob Maaddi). "You start out with that group and you say: 'OK, let’s go try to do something special, let’s create a process and let’s get better at that process.' So I really enjoy that, and whether it’s at the high school level or college, I don’t really care and I don’t really care what the position is. I just enjoy being part of teams and so hopefully that’s in the future some day."

McCown notched regular-season stats with nine different NFL clubs from 2002 through the 2019 campaign and spent a portion of the 2020 season as a backup with the Houston Texans before they shockingly interviewed him for their full-time head-coaching job in January 2021. Houston again met with McCown last January following the dismissal of David Culley but ultimately promoted defensive coordinator Lovie Smith.

The Texans are 1-9-1 heading into this Sunday's home game against the 4-7 Cleveland Browns.

Maaddi points out that McCown has worked as a high school assistant coach in Texas the past two seasons. The 43-year-old also hosts a football-related podcast.

As for Saturday, he had no coaching experience at the pro or college levels and was working for ESPN when he was named interim head coach by Colts owner Jim Irsay on Nov. 7. Saturday holds a 1-2 record as the 4-7-1 Colts prepare to play at the 8-3 Dallas Cowboys this Sunday night.

"Maybe pro coaching is in the future," McCown explained. "We’ll see. Certainly, the opportunity to meet with and discuss that with the Texans was interesting and special and I learned a lot. (I have) so much respect for the head coaching position that you need to at least go visit with those people and learn and see what it’s about. ... I love the NFL. I enjoyed my career, the different stops. I’ve had so many experiences of what to do, a lot of what not to do. And so I just want to maybe bring that to a team one day and be able to help the team."

It's unclear if any NFL club or top-tier college program plans to interview McCown for an opening, but his name has surfaced in the past.
