Julian Edelman: Cam Newton 'works his tail off'

Patriots quarterback Cam Newton wasn't guaranteed the starting position when he signed with New England, but he very well could be the Week 1 starter.

Newton has been putting in the work ahead of the 2020 campaign, and he's extremely motivated to get back to MVP form with the Patriots. That work hasn't gone unnoticed, either, as Julian Edelman praised the 31-year-old for his work ethic.

"He's definitely a former MVP for a reason. The guy is a professional. He works his tail off. He's extremely dynamic, and he has a charming personality," Edelman said of Newton on WEEI Sports Radio Network, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. "It's been fun to be around. He has a confidence about him. All quarterbacks have a confidence, but it's just a little different with Cam. It's a vibe that can feel you and get you in a mindset."

Newton is competing for the starting job against second-year player Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer.

In training camp thus far, it sounds like Newton has been the most impressive of the three quarterbacks. On Thursday, Stidham went 2-for-6 with two interceptions in 11-on-11 drills while Newton completed 10-of-17 passes. Stidham also has thrown twice as many interceptions as Newton and Hoyer combined.

According to NFL Network's Mike Giardi, Stidham's struggles could stem from a hip injury he's dealing with. That injury will reportedly set him back several weeks, Giardi adds.

If Newton wants the starting job bad enough, it appears like it'll be his for the taking.
