Julio Jones on Super Bowl LI: ‘4 Targets in the Super Bowl. That’s Insane’

Julio Jones, the Atlanta Falcons’ legendary wide receiver, built a lasting legacy as one of the NFL’s best through his explosive play and steady work during his 11 years with the team. Drafted sixth overall in 2011, Jones changed the receiver position with his rare mix of size, speed and effort. He finished with 12,896 receiving yards and 61 touchdowns in a Falcons uniform, both team records. His highlight-reel catches and big-game performances, including a key role in the Falcons’ 2016 Super Bowl run, made him a fan favorite in Atlanta. Fans still chant his name at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. On the Legacy Locker Room podcast, Jones opened up about Atlanta’s loss in Super Bowl LI.

“I have yet to go back and watch that game,” Jones said. “In that game I only had four opportunities… four targets in the Super Bowl. That’s insane.”

Jones has long been known for his reserved and quiet nature, rarely speaking out on controversial moments. His recent comments suggest the disappointment has been weighing on him for years. For a player who gave everything to his team and was known for showing up in big games, the lack of involvement in the biggest game of his career still clearly stings.

Despite the heartbreak of Super Bowl LI, Jones’ legacy with the Falcons remains untouched. He gave the city of Atlanta a decade of greatness, defined by consistency, humility and game-changing talent. And while his four targets in the biggest game of his career may always raise questions, they don’t define the Hall of Fame-caliber impact he made every time he stepped on the field.
