Justin Fields has had an up-and-down start to his NFL career, playing for three teams in his first five seasons. He has been traded to his fourth team, the Kansas City Chiefs, where he will back up superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Fields was signed by the Jets entering 2025 to be the starting quarterback in New York. He got off to a great start, scoring at least 25 fantasy points in three of his first four games. However, it went all downhill from there as he only topped 20 fantasy points in one of his final five starts. What made it worse was that he had three games under seven fantasy points, including the disastrous London game vs the Broncos. There were just too many lowlights for Fields and the Jets offense, causing them to bench him for the second half of the season.
According to KeepTradeCut, a website that crowdsources dynasty values from players who use the site, Fields is QB37. He is ranked around Tua Tagovailoa, Anthony Richardson, Jalen Milroe, Geno Smith, and Will Howard. He is worth a mid-third-round draft pick in rookie dynasty drafts.
Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets entering 2025, so 2026 will be the second and final year of his deal. Most of that contract was converted to a signing bonus in 2025, so the Chiefs will not be paying Fields all that much this year. Fields will be a free agent after 2026, so he will be looking for a new contract in 2027.
Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL at the end of the 2025 season, and it is unknown if he will be ready for the start of the 2026 season. On March 25th, Mahomes posted on Instagram that he was back throwing, so his recovery is going well. However, we won’t know until training camp if Mahomes will be fully ready for Week 1.
Fields is the clear backup in Kansas City, so if Mahomes is not ready to go, it will be Fields under center. Regardless of whether Fields ever gets to start or not, he gets to learn from Andy Reid and Mahomes, two of the best offensive minds in the game. Think of it as Sam Darnold with the 49ers learning from Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy. This could be a good chance for Fields to sit back and restart.
Fields is in a much better spot than he was at the end of 2025, so even if he is not going to get a chance to start much in 2026, dynasty managers should still feel good about Fields’ landing spot. If Fields ever gets to start, he immediately becomes a top 15 fantasy quarterback in that offense. If he can succeed in limited starts, he will get a decent contract, as Malik Willis did with the Dolphins. The potential is still there with Fields, and all he needs is a few starts in Kansas City, bearing Mahomes’ injury, he can prove himself. Therefore, I think he is worth a stash in dynasty leagues.
