New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields may have had the first ever revenge game for a player against their current team.
After hearing his own owner, Woody Johnson, throw him under the bus this week and basically put all of the blame on him for the team's struggles, Fields helped engineer a staggering fourth-quarter comeback to lead the Jets to a 39-38 win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
It is the first Jets win of the season and the first for Aaron Glenn as the team's head coach.
Think about the week Fields had in New York before he was able to help lead the Jets to their win on Sunday.
Early in the week, the team's owner not only put a lion's share of the blame for the team's struggles on him, but he was basically openly mocking him over his inability to complete passes. Then, the Jets seemed ready to make a change at starting quarterback and appeared on the verge of naming Tyrod Taylor the starter for Sunday's game, right up until Taylor was too injured to play and was ruled out on Friday.
Fields, to his credit, did not let the outside noise bother him. He focused on preparing and being the best teammate he could be and then played one of his best games of the season.
He completed 21-of-32 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 31 yards on 11 carries. He also completed a crucial two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 38-32, giving the Jets an opportunity to take the lead with an extra point on their touchdown with less than two minutes to play.
They are not terribly dominant numbers, but they were good enough and he was efficient playing mostly mistake-free football. He also helped lead the Jets to 23 fourth-quarter points, helping them erase a 14-point deficit.
While Fields has no doubt struggled this season and at times been bad, he has been far from the only problem in New York. The entire roster and coaching staff has had issues, and it was always unfair for the top person in the organization to publicly single him out.
It might not turn the Jets' season around, but for one day, Fields was able to get the last laugh. And it was against his own team.
