Justin Fields Tipped For Career Rebirth With Jets

The New York Jets are banking on Justin Fields being "the" guy for the franchise in 2025, having already nailed their colors to his mast by announcing him as the starter over Tyrod Taylor.

With Fields never really taking over an offense to the point where he was seen as the long-term option in Chicago or Pittsburgh, he now comes to the Jets, and the hope is that this time, it'll stick.

Having been 4-2 as the starter with the Steelers last season, Fields lost the starting role to Russell Wilson, so it isn't like Justin was "bad," but more so, Mike Tomlin wanted more.

For CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin, Fields might be the latest quarterback to have a career resurgence on another team when the league is counting them out.

"Over the last few years, we've seen some once highly touted quarterbacks have late career blooms like Baker Mayfield, Geno Smith, and, more recently, Sam Darnold," Benjamin writes. "For the Jets, they're rolling the dice on Justin Fields potentially being the latest edition of that trend, inking the former Steelers quarterback to a two-year, $40 million contract in free agency.

"Last season, Fields was 4-2 as the starter for Pittsburgh, and the offense averaged 20.7 points per game. Given his relationship with former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson, there is reason to suggest that Fields could be even more productive during his tenure with New York."

Fields has a solid offensive line, a good running back room with Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, along with Garrett Wilson and draftee Mason Taylor as his weapons.

But Fields needs a genuine No. 2 receiver to give him someone other than Wilson to throw to, plus, defenses can take Wilson away without having to worry about Josh Reynolds or Allen Lazard tearing them apart.

If, and that's a big if, the Jets can somehow get another considerable weapon for Fields, then given what is being put around him, coupled with the culture Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey are trying to build, he might be the latest quarterback to see an upturn in fortunes.

But it's a big ask.
