Justin Jefferson contract could become huge question mark for Vikings

Minnesota entered the offseason far sooner than it hoped it would, which means attention will soon turn toward wide receiver Justin Jefferson as he works with the team on a new contract.

Per Pro Football Talk, Jefferson is eligible for a contract extension this offseason that would pay him what he's owed after proving to be arguably the best receiver in football in 2022.

Jefferson chose his words carefully when talking about his future with the franchise. While admitting he wants to continue playing in Minnesota, he made no concessions about his contract desires.

"I mean, I will be wherever I'm wanted. If they want me here, I'm here. That's not something that I can really control," said Jefferson.

Jefferson just completed arguably the best three-year stretch for a wide receiver to begin his career in NFL history. Since entering the league after being drafted 22nd overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, Jefferson has 324 catches, 4,825 yards and 25 touchdown catches. He's increased his receptions and receiving yards in each of his three NFL seasons, leading the NFL in both this season.

He is a strong contender to receive Offensive Player of the Year honors at the 12th Annual NFL Honors in February and will earn top dollar on his next contract. Last offseason saw an explosion of money invested in wide receivers. Tyreek Hill (four-year, $120 million) and Davante Adams (five-year, $140 million) signed the most prominent deals.

Per Over the Cap, Jefferson has a 2023 base salary of $2,399,473.

If the Vikings are unable to work out a contract extension with Jefferson, there's little doubt the team would receive an exorbitant return in a trade.

Miami acquired Hill from Kansas City for five picks: 2022 first-, second- and fourth-round picks, as well as fourth- and sixth-round picks in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.

Minnesota would be foolish not to give Jefferson whatever he wants. Thirty-one other teams hope the Vikings blow it.
