The Detroit Lions have turned things around in a big way since 2021, and one of the more subtile improvements they have made has been on special teams.
While Detroit's kicking and punting has mostly remained elite, the team has found a way to improve drastically on returns. The Lions have become quite dynamic with regards to both kick returns and punt returns, and the thanks goes to Kalif Raymond as much as Dave Fipp.
Raymond has shaken things up as a returner since signing with the Lions in 2021, and he broke yet another game open with his explosiveness. While Detroit was beating the Cleveland Browns, they didn't put the game away until the fourth-quarter, when Raymond took a punt to the house for a 27-10 lead.
The play was good enough to make some franchise history for the Lions. Raymond has now returned three punts for scores while in Detroit, which the team revealed is now tied for fourth in franchise history.

Afterward, Dan Campbell gave Raymond a shout-out for what he means to the Lions. As he explained, the mindset coming in was to get Raymond some looks. Quickly, he stepped up and delivered when challenged by the team to make a big play.
"I don't know if I can say enough great things about Kalif (Raymond). He's a stud. We came in Wednesday and (Dave) Fipp and I were talking. Fipp says, 'I think we need to let him cut it loose. Tell him to cut it loose a little bit on some of these punt returns.' And we said, 'Hey, we're going to get these blocked up. Kalif, go after it.' He was aggressive. He took that to heart. He trusted our guys and he was fearless the whole game."
Raymond's fearlessness has become his top hallmark with the Lions. He continues to impress by putting his head down and simply making big plays whenever he is asked. To see him setting impressive franchise records is very rewarding.
While other big names might get more of the headlines for the Lions, a team has many players who make up its heartbeat. Raymond is certainly one of those in Detroit, even if many on the outside don't always see him like that minus his explosive returns.
Working behind the scenes with everyone across the roster, Goff understands what Raymond means to the team, and is quick to point out that his hard work and determination every single week are huge variables for the franchise.
"He's amazing. He's one of those heartbeat guys for us and kind of does everything right every day. He's a great guy to be around, is a mentor and a role model for a lot of these guys. I love having him as a teammate. He's incredible. He breathes life into people. It's fun seeing him succeed like that and have those moments, but it's not surprising at all. He's a stud and I hope he keeps doing it."
Raymond has become a game-changer in more than one way for the Lions, and proved how valuable he is once again with another big play to help Detroit win a game. He's always been there behind the scenes.
