Kansas City Chiefs Announce Multiple Coaching Changes

The Kansas City Chiefs finished the 2025 season with arguably the most disappointing 6-11 record in the NFL, their first losing season since 2012 (2–14) and their first playoff miss since 2014.

Kansas City started 5-3 before collapsing down the stretch, losing eight of their final nine games. Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers. It was the same game in which the Chiefs were eliminated from postseason contention, ending a decade-long playoff streak that included three Super Bowl titles from 2020 to 2024.

The Chiefs ranked 25th in rushing offense last season, averaging just 106 yards per game. Not surprisingly, this is a dramatic drop from the franchise's championship pedigree. Mahomes is facing a nine-to-12-month recovery timeline and uncertainty about his Week 1 availability.

While he is "hitting all checkpoints" in rehab, medical experts and the team remain cautious, noting that his availability for the season opener is a "possibility" rather than a certainty. So, the Chiefs overhauled their offensive staff on Friday.

The Chiefs announced five new coaching hires via social media, headlined by former NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray as running backs coach. He replaces Todd Pinkston, who was axed following the disappointing season.

Murray spent the past six seasons coaching at the Oklahoma Sooners after a seven-year NFL career that included a 2014 Offensive Player of the Year award with the Dallas Cowboys

Chad O'Shea returns to Kansas City, where he began his NFL career as a volunteer assistant in 2003. He joins as a wide receivers coach after previous NFL stints with the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns.

Terry Bradden Jr. was named assistant defensive line coach for head coach Andy Reid’s squad, while Nate Pagan and CJ Cox fill offensive and defensive quality control roles, respectively.

The Chiefs have the ninth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, their highest selection since taking offensive tackle Eric Fisher first overall in 2013. Many mock drafts project that they will choose an edge rusher or an interior defensive lineman to address lackluster defense.

Some analysts have linked the franchise to running back Breece Hall of the New York Jets in free agency. However, the hiring of Murray suggests the team may focus on developing younger players instead.
