Kansas City Chiefs ceiling and floor for 2023

The Kansas City Chiefs hold the potential to become a dynasty after two Super Bowl titles in four seasons. It won't be easy however, as no team has repeated as champs in 18 years.

With the conclusion of training camp and preseason, here's the Chiefs' ceiling and floor heading into Week 1.

Ceiling: 14-3

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the best player in the NFL. Last season, the 27-year-old led the NFL in passing yards with a career-high 5,250 in 17 games. He also threw for 41 TDs and posted a 77.6 QBR, well above the league average. Don't be surprised if he captures his third league MVP, which he's favored to win, per OddsChecker.

The Chiefs could have an elite ground attack if second-year running back Isiah Pacheco continues to develop into a workhorse. The 251st pick of the 2022 NFL Draft started 11 games last season, rushing for 830 yards on 170 attempts (4.9 yards per attempt). Since he's RB1 this season, he could become a 1,000-yard rusher.

Plus, the Chiefs are one of the most consistent organizations in the league. They've won seven consecutive AFC West titles, made five straight conference championship games and posted two 14-win seasons since 2019.

Floor: 10-7

The holdout of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones looms over Kansas City.

"I don't know when he's coming," head coach Andy Reid said in a Sunday news conference. On X, formerly known as Twitter, Jones recently said he's willing to sit until "Week 8" if he doesn't receive a new deal.

The 29-year-old missing several games will weaken the Kansas City pass-rush. No other Chief recorded six or more sacks last season, while Jones registered 15.5 in 17 games. Furthermore, Kansas City faces elite QBs, such as Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence (Week 2), New York's Aaron Rodgers (Week 4) and Los Angeles' Justin Herbert (Week 7), early in the season.

Aside from tight end Travis Kelce, the receiving corps lacks experience. The Chiefs are banking on rookie WR Rashee Rice and second-year WR Skyy Moore. They must develop quickly because Mahomes needs elite pass-catchers to  maximize his incredible ability.
