Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt has received some great news following his arrest last month.
Merritt, who found himself in some hot water ahead of the NFL Draft, was charged with “unlawfully, knowingly, or recklessly” causing bodily harm to his daughter on April 23.
He was released on a $2,500 bond, pleading not guilty.
According to the Johnson County court records cited by the Daily Mail, the case against the 54-year-old has been dismissed without prejudice.
The Mail also noted that the court sealed the probable cause affidavit.
Merrit is married with five children, including one stepchild, and has worked in the NFL since 2001.
A respected defensive assistant, he has been with the Chiefs for seven years. He spent 13 years with the New York Giants prior to that.
He helped the teams win five Super Bowls combined, having also coached several Pro Bowl players.
Merritt was a linebacker at North Carolina State. He went on to play in the NFL for four years before transitioning to coaching.
The Miami Dolphins selected him as a seventh-round pick in 1993. He spent three seasons in Miami before playing for the Arizona Cardinals for a year, then headed to Europe.
As a coach, he’s also worked with the Cardinals and New York Jets, spending some time as an assistant coach in college.
The Chiefs will rely on him to help develop their first-round pick, rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane, this year. He will also continue working with second-year starter Nohl Williams.
They will be pleased with the latest development in his case, given his importance.
