Kansas City Chiefs could lose defensive line coach Joe Cullen to defensive coordinator job after Super Bowl LVIII
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs could lose a beloved assistant coach after the Super Bowl LVIII tilt with the San Francisco 49ers.

According to CBS Sports reporter Jonathan Jones, Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen is being considered as a candidate for multiple defensive coordinator jobs, both in the NFL and in college football. Jones reports that Cullen is "in the mix" for both the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders defensive coordinator vacancies, as well as the vacancy at the University of Michigan.

Cullen was previously a defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining Kansas City as the team's defensive line coach in 2022. He has been a defensive line coach for six different NFL teams since 2006 and has been both a defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at the college football level, too.

The 56-year-old assistant coach is beloved in Kansas City, not only by his players, but also by the entirety of Chiefs Kingdom. He's helped that position group turn a corner for the Chiefs. Should he leave to pursue a defensive coordinator position, it'd be a major loss in Kansas City. It'd be especially painful knowing that the team is expected to have several key personnel departures on the defensive line during the 2024 NFL offseason.

As for potential replacement options, an in-house promotion of Chiefs assistant D-Line coach Terry Bradden Jr. would be the likeliest scenario. He's held the position for the past three seasons after serving the previous three seasons as a defensive quality control coach and one as a defensive assistant in Kansas City.
