Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Chamarri Conner has been more than busy during OTAs
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have been known as a franchise with weapons. They develop guys and turn them into weapons. In the past, this has been primarily on the offensive side of the ball, with players like Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce leading the charge in that department and, most recently, Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco.

But there is another weapon on the defensive side of the ball that the Chiefs deployed a bit last season, but not nearly as much as they could have. With L'Jarius Sneed being traded to the Tennessee Titans, the Chiefs need someone to step up. And they already had that player on their roster.

Last offseason, the Chiefs strategically drafted Chamarri Conner on day three. He was immediately viewed as a potential Sneed replacement then, and he will undoubtedly be viewed that way this season. Conner's limited playtime didn't hinder his ability to make impactful plays when he was on the field, showcasing his potential to be a game-changer for the Chiefs' defense.

In 2023, his rookie season, Conner finished with one interception, one pass deflection, and 36 tackles in seven games started. With Sneed gone, his role will only improve, and from the sounds of it, the Chiefs are already putting him to work in every way possible at OTAs, which started on Wednesday.

"I give big props to Chamarri [Conner]," cornerback Trent McDuffie said on Wednesday. "They have him playing nickel, safety, dime, both safeties in this defense. I'm like, yo, you got it, this is crazy. He asks me questions, and I'm like, sometimes, I don't know, man, you got to just play, you know.

"He's one of those dudes who is quiet but works really hard. He asks a lot of questions, and he is very detailed. Maybe right now, he may make a few bumps along the road, but I just keep telling him, man, just keep working, and you will get better at it."

Last season, McDuffie played a lot of nickel, and with Sneed playing on the outside and being a lockdown defender, they will need McDuffie to move outside more now than he did last season. That means someone has to step into the nickel position when the Chiefs play nickel, and Conner is more than qualified to do so.

But the Chiefs are also playing Conner on a dime and using him in both safety positions, which he played a bit in college at Virginia Tech as well. He's pretty busy during OTAs, but that's not something he can't handle. The Chiefs are just prepping him for the future, as they know he will be a valuable weapon for them on defense.
