Kansas City Chiefs GM Adamantly Defends Xavier Worthy Pick In 2024 NFL Draft
Sara Diggins / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Kansas City Chiefs knew they needed help at the wide receiver position for 2024. They went out and got Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy. His elite speed was something the team could not resist. With Andy Reid running the offense and Patrick Mahomes throwing the ball, they are counting on a huge season from the young player. There has been criticism of the pick. Worthy is fast but is a very raw prospect, and some question how much of an impact he will have. GM Brett Veach defended the pick in a recent interview.

Kansas City Chiefs GM Defends Xavier Worthy Pick

Veach went on Sirius XM NFL and continued to adamantly defend the pick. The narrative has been the team did not look past his speed and made a dumb pick. Veach is trying to debunk this narrative.

“Everyone’s going to see the 4.21 speed, But I think his ability to bend and get out of breaks — and instinctively play the position — was something that really kind of stood out for us.

“Listen, we’re always certainly going to want talented guys that can run fast,” explained the GM. “But I think his ability to process information throughout the pre-draft deal was super important to us. [He’s] a guy that we can bring in here and do different things with.”

The Kansas City Chiefs believe Xavier Worthy is more than just a speedster. He brings many tools to the team, and with the right offense, he can thrive.

Benefit Of The Doubt

It seems strange that we are not giving the Kansas City Chiefs the benefit of the doubt. While they have had their misses, the team has also drafted some quality players in the past few years. This team won the Super Bowl last year with subpar receiver play. Even if Xavier Worthy has a mediocre season, it will be leaps and bounds ahead of what the Chiefs unit did in 2023. This team deserves the benefit of the doubt. The pick has question marks, but expect Andy Reid to be able to provide some answers.

One thing is for sure: this offense is going to be fun to watch in 2024. Xavier Worthy has the speed to run go-routes deep, and I expect the Kansas City Chiefs will try at least one deep ball for Worthy every game. Brett Veach is confident, and now it is up to the team to develop him into the next great Chiefs receiver.
