Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid borrows recent Texas trick play and uses a Longhorns alum to execute it

Looks like Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid has been watching the Texas Longhorns on Saturdays.

The Chiefs ran a play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills where quarterback Patrick Mahomes executed two fakes before flipping the ball to Xavier Worthy for an end-around.

“Look at this trickery. They get it to Worthy,” CBS announcer Jim Nantz said.

It sure looked like the same play Texas ran against Florida that resulted in a 44-yard gainer for Isaiah Bond. That play sparked UT’s first scoring drive and propelled the Horns to a 42-point lead.

Similar pre-snap motion, though not exact. But it had the same double fakes from quarterback Quinn Ewers before the give to Bond.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was almost wistful when talking about how that play came about.

“You know, probably too much time for us as a staff,” Sarkisian said the following Monday. “You get in there and you start going through what if. What if? What if? And you start going through it, and then we’re like, well, sometimes it’s throwing mud on a wall and seeing what sticks.

“We ran it in practice, and we’re like, wow, that looked way better than we probably thought it was going to work.”

Sarkisian pointed out that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

“The ball handling kind of catches your eye, but there’s a really critical block that (receiver) Matthew Golden has to make on the front side just to get it started,” Sarkisian said. “And then anytime we can get that play in particular, but on all those plays, anytime we can get the ball in our playmakers hands in space and allow them to to do what they're best at — and that’s run. We can run.”

Clearly, Reid was thinking the same thing. Get the ball in your best playmakers’ hands and let him make plays. Worthy had only seven yards on that particular gain, but he also had four catches for 61 receiving yards and one touchdown in the first half as the Bills led 16-14.
