Kansas City Chiefs kick off the most crucial phase of the NFL's 2025 offseason workout program with OTAs on Tuesday
USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of dozens of NFL teams moving into Phase III of their offseason workout program on Tuesday, May 27. They'll begin Organized Team Activities (OTAs), the program's final phase.

Teams can hold up to 10 total OTA practice sessions, which the Chiefs typically divide into three groups. OTAs consist of on-field workouts that feature individual and group activities, including walkthroughs, but do not allow live contact. However, 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted during OTAs. Only protective knee pads, elbow pads, and helmets are allowed; no other pads are permitted.

Given how the Chiefs approach the rest of the offseason workout program (which is held virtually), they typically have strong attendance at their OTAs despite being voluntary. Players like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce set the tone with their attendance annually. We already know that No. 15 has reported for OTAs on Tuesday.

While OTAs are voluntary and not every player will attend every practice session, Phase III also includes the first mandatory component of the offseason. Article 22 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) allows teams to hold one mandatory minicamp for rookies and veterans during Phase III of the offseason workout program.

Here's a look at the full schedule:

Chiefs' offseason schedule

  • Organized Team Activities Group 1: May 27-29
  • Organized Team Activities Group 2: June 2-4
  • Organized Team Activities Group 3: June 10-13
  • Mandatory Minicamp: June 17-19

The Chiefs will hold media availability one day per practice week during OTAs. The first will be on Thursday, May 29, the final day of practice.

The biggest question of 2025 OTAs: Will Chiefs RG Trey Smith attend?

While attendance is voluntary, the Chiefs could have at least one contract-related holdout to consider during OTAs. Trey Smith remains on the franchise tag seeking a long-term contract extension. Will he go to OTAs and not participate in practices as a means of a hold-in? Will he stay away from OTAs as he seeks a new deal? Kansas City has until mid-July to extend him long-term and lower his cap hit ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
