Joe Thuney's trade to the Chicago Bears left a big hole at one of the most key positions on the offensive line for the Kansas City Chief.
But, it gives one second year player a key opportunity to make a switch that could benefit his career.
The Chiefs moved Kingsley Suamataia to guard after he had been initially drafted in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft as a tackle. And on Thursday, head coach Andy Reid revealed why he's a better fit on the inside.
“We moved him there for that second Denver game, so I mentioned that was one of the positives – the only positive that came out of that game but I thought he did a nice job there so we’re moving him in there," Reid explained. "Listen, (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) Spags runs a million different looks, so this is the best thing for him, to get in there and have a bunch of things thrown at him and he’s doing a nice job so far.”
So with that, Suamataia could earn the starting job, with Reid confirming that the second-year lineman is right in the mix.
“He and (Mike) Caliendo are working there and doing that,” Reid added.
In April, Reid also spoke about Suamataia's versatility, confirming that it was one of the reasons they decided to draft him.
"When we brought him in, we knew he had that flexibility," Reid said. "We just felt that way, athletically. And he is a very good athlete. He can run and he can pass block, do all the things that he needs to do. I thought he felt more comfortable in there (at guard) as a young guy. Sometimes you see guys that start in there (at guard) and then work their way back outside."
This will certainly be a position battle for fans to keep an eye on this preseason.
