Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes gives the Rashee Rice injury update that fans have been desperately waiting for
USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice appears to be on track to get in a full offseason of work, on top of being healthy to start the 2025 NFL season.

Speaking to media members on Wednesday, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes updated everyone on WR Rashee Rice's progress as he recovers from a season-ending knee injury suffered in a collision with Mahomes during Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers

Rice has been expected to be available at the start of training camp, and his social media updates suggested as much. Now, we've got word from Mahomes, who has seen Rice work out in Texas during recent throwing sessions, that the third-year wideout is on the mend.

"The expectations are high," Mahomes said of Rice. "I mean, he looks really good. He's running routes. He's catching the football. I don't know when we get back into the actual OTAs, how much he'll be able to do, but he's been able to do everything here, as far as running routes and everything like that. And I know it was unfortunate how he got hurt last year, but it was so early in the season that he's going to get pretty much a complete offseason, which I think will be big going into this season."

We already knew that Rice was cleared to run and participate in some football-related activities, but hearing that he's running routes and catching the ball without limitations is a good sign. The Chiefs might be cautious with him at OTAs, which is why it's all the more important that he gets this work in with Mahomes now to knock off some of the rust.

"It helps that this year, it's a lot of the same receivers that I've worked with previously, and so not a ton of teaching," Mahomes said of the Texas throwing sessions. "A lot of guys know what they need to do. It's just refining their skills."

Mahomes is looking to get everything he can out of this particular period before he, Rice, and others return to Kansas City for the next phase of the voluntary offseason workout program. What they accomplish now will only help the foundation built for the upcoming season.

"Glad a lot of these guys have come down to Texas," Mahomes concluded. "I mean, we've had pretty much everybody down here at least one day or a couple, and so we've gotten some good work in. We'll finish that up this next week or two, and then we'll get to Kansas City, and I'm excited to get back and get back into the swing of things."
