Kansas City Chiefs Receive Huge Praise For 1 Key Offseason Move
Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are wrapping up the end of an incredibly busy and dramatic offseason. From the high of being able to keep superstar defensive lineman Chris Jones, the low of seeing Rashee Rice get into bad legal trouble off-the-field, the Chiefs have experienced everything possible this offseason.

Keeping Jones in town was no easy or cheap task. Heading into the offseason, it was expected that Jones would end up leaving town. The AFC rival Houston Texans were expected to have a good shot to land him.

When all was said and done, the Chiefs got aggressive and opened up the checkbook, giving Jones a massive five-year deal worth almost $160 million.

Those are the kinds of move that Super Bowl contenders make. They don’t let elite talent get away.

Kansas City Chiefs Receive Huge Praise For Key Offseason Move

With the offseason finishing up, the Kansas City Chiefs are receiving major praise for their move to re-sign Jones.

Mike Sando of The Athletic called keeping Jones a “critical” move for the Chiefs and gave them their flowers.

“Keeping Chris Jones was critical for the defense, even if it meant trading L’Jarius Sneed to the Titans instead of paying him as well. Kansas City has picked its spots in terms of making some moves for the long term (trading Tyreek Hill) and others for the short term (opening the checkbook for Jones). It’s hard to dispute Jones’ value to the defense, especially in critical situations. Keeping him gives the Chiefs their best shot at winning a third consecutive Super Bowl.”

Jones has become the heart and soul of the Chiefs’ defense. Losing him would have been a devastating blow to their chances of accomplishing a championship three-peat in 2024.

During the 2023 season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Jones ended up recording 30 total tackles to go along with 10.5 sacks and four defended passes. He forces opposing offenses to run their offenses away from him. There are very few defensive tackles with that ability to disrupt a game plan.

At 29 years of age, Jones got exactly the contract he was looking to receive. He has long-term safety and this contract will take him through the remainder of his prime. Staying with the Chiefs and contending for a Super Bowl is always a bonus as well.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see how the Kansas City Chiefs fare in 2024. They got quite a bit better this offseason with their moves and as long as Patrick Mahomes is in town, they’ll be a Super Bowl threat. Keeping Jones in town was a key piece of the championship puzzle and they were able to get that done.
