There is going to be a lot of wheeling and dealing over the next couple of weeks as teams try to perfect their rosters heading into the regular season.

Many players will be put on the trade block, and among those who already have is Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr . With emerging rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt and veteran Austin Ekeler on the roster, Robinson has become expendable despite having a solid three-year run in Washington.

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach always does his due diligence when a player becomes available, and we know he isn't afraid to pull the trigger when he sees a player he likes. Could that be the case with Robinson? I say not so fast. . .

Chiefs should not pursue Brian Robinson Jr.

I'll admit, K.C.'s RB room leaves a bit to be desired. Starter Isiah Pacheco has been a solid player for the most part throughout his three-year NFL career, but is definitely a tier 2 RB. He has also had injury woes over the past two years, missing a total of 11 games during that span.

Then there's Kareem Hunt, who is at the dreaded age of 30 and averaged just 3.6 yards per carry last season. The Chiefs brought in Elijah Mitchell during the offseason, but he could be on the roster bubble and has an extensive injury history. Finally, we have Brashard Smith, who is an exciting prospect that possesses speed and receiving abilities, but could be a bit of a project as a rookie.

However, even with those flaws, acquiring Robinson really doesn't make sense for K.C. Robinson runs with good power and is an adequate receiver and pass blocker, but the same can be said for both Pacheco and Hunt. In Pacheco's case specifically, he could be equally as powerful as Robinson after adding some muscle during the offseason, and is certainly faster than Robinson.

Although Robinson is younger than Hunt, there's a comfort level with Hunt knowing the offense well. Hunt also nearly outrushed Robinson in 2024 in less games played. As for Mitchell, if he does end up making the Chiefs 53-man roster, it will be because they value his speed - which is far beyond Pacheco's, Hunt's, and Robinson's.

It appears likely that K.C. will have a package of plays for Smith, and if he makes an impact, his workload could increase as the season goes on. At the end of the day, Robinson is too similar to Pacheco and Hunt, and arguably less effective. When you also factor in the Chiefs having to surrender draft capitol to get him, it's a no-brainer to pass.
