The Kansas City Chiefs are in a position that they have rarely seen themselves in over the course of the past decade. After missing the NFL Playoffs and finishing the 2025 season with a losing record, the Chiefs are looking to step back into relevancy next season.

Unfortunately, they face an uphill battle. Two-time NFL MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes will miss the start of the regular season as he recovers from a torn ACL. What is more, Kansas City, once again, must address is wide receiver room, which lacks depth.

And while they have not yet made a big splash move in free agency in this department, there is still time to do so.

The Kansas City Chiefs are urged to sign wide receiver Stefon Diggs

On player that is still available on the NFL free agent market is four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Recently, Bleacher Report named him as the one free agent the Chiefs should pursue:

“The Chiefs need to add a wide receiver to a room that currently sports Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and not much else. Kansas City has also made something of a habit of bringing in veteran wide receivers who were cast off by other teams.

“Diggs is also coming off a quietly-solid season with the New England Patriots: 102 targets, 85 receptions, 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.

“Right now, Kansas City’s pass-catchers are more a weakness than a strength. The addition of Diggs could change that.”

Indeed, adding Diggs makes a ton of sense in that he would provide a top pass catcher to the Kansas City offense. However, the notion does ignore one key factor: age.

The Chiefs found out the hard way last year that they are not getting any younger, and an aging roster is not going to win them as many games as it did before. Diggs had a good season last year, it is true. However, he is a short-term solution to what has become a long-term problem.

If Kansas City wants to compete for my Super Bowls beyond 2026, they need to start adding younger pass catchers that can grow with Mahomes as their quarterback as opposed to signing veterans to short-term contract hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
