Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Could Be On Chopping Block
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking to make history during the 2024 NFL season. The back-to-back Super Bowl champions will be looking to accomplish the first three-peat in league history.

Winning one Super Bowl is difficult enough. Taking home the Lombardi Trophy three seasons in a row would be incredibly challenging, but who is going to bet against this team? The Kansas City Chiefs have been the most dominant team in the NFL since Andy Reid took over as head coach.

His work on the sidelines combined with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback have resulted in video game-like numbers being produced. Even with some shortcomings when it comes to the supporting cast around Mahomes, they have found a way to get the job done.

This offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs have done what they can to alleviate that issue. In free agency, they signed wide receiver Marquise Brown and used their first-round pick on wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

With new additions, something will have to give when it comes to the roster. That could be part of the reason that David Kenyon of Bleacher Report has named Kadarius Toney as the best player on the team who could still be cut this offseason.

“The idea of Kadarius Toney has been far more exciting than his performance in three NFL seasons. Worse yet, a mistake-plagued season with the Chiefs included just 200 yards on 38 touches for Toney. He’s an expendable piece in Kansas City,” wrote Kenyon.

A first-round pick of the New York Giants in 2021, Toney butt heads with the new regime instantly. As a result, Joe Schoen unloaded him in a trade during the 2022 season. Toney has had his moments, but they have been far and few between.

As noted by Kenyon, he isn’t giving the Kansas City Chiefs much in the way of production. He is going to be even lower on the depth chart in 2024 than he was in 2023, but the team could have to keep him around.

With the future of Rashee Rice up in the air, the Chiefs probably can’t afford to release Toney. Unless he bombs during offseason workouts, his roster spot could be safe until the team has a better idea of Rice’s availability.
