The Kansas City Chiefs will look to stay hot and win for the fifth time in six games as they host the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football.

Everything is clicking for the Chiefs right now. They are averaging 32 points over their last four games, and their defense is coming off pitching a shutout against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Commanders were expected to make a run at the Super Bowl this season, but have not lived up to those expectations with a 3-4 record.

Let’s dive in to five things to watch for during this matchup.

Chiefs' front seven vs. Commanders' rushing attack

Running the ball is Washington's identity, as it ranks first in the NFL in rushing yards and second in rushing yards per game. That will be the case even more so in this game, as backup Marcus Mariota gets the start for the injured Jayden Daniels.

Running backs Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Chris Rodriguez Jr., and Jeremy McNichols are averaging a combined 6.3 yards per carry this season, and Mariota is one of the better running QBs in the league. Kansas City's defense has been middle of the road against the run so far, allowing the 15-most rushing yards in the NFL. The Commanders have a very talented offensive line, and will be able to stay in the game if they can control the line of scrimmage.

Spreading the ball around

The Chiefs' offense is back to full strength, and has the deepest cast of weapons it's had in a long time. QB Patrick Mahomes has trust and chemistry with many of his pass catchers, which allows him to scan the field for the most open receiver and not force throws.

Mahomes has been keeping opposing defenses guessing as he's spread the ball around, connecting with at least eight different receivers in each of his last four games. Each of his pass catchers bring something unique to the table, giving K.C. an answer to every coverage look it faces.

Chiefs' DBs vs. Commanders WRs Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel

Part of the reason for Washington's struggles on offense this season can be attributed to McLaurin and Samuel only being on the field together for three games. They are both on track to play in this matchup, which posses a big challenge for the Chiefs' secondary.

Samuel is having the best season he's had in a while, and McLaurin is an All-Pro caliber receiver when healthy. K.C. has been excellent against the pass thus far, surrendering the fourth-fewest passing yards per game. Chiefs DBs will need to make sure they're keeping everything in front of them, as both McLaurin and Samuel are legitimate deep threats.

Taking the rushing attack up a notch

The Chiefs are far from a juggernaut running the ball, but they have been much better at it in recent weeks. They have crossed the 100-yard mark in each of their past four games, and have gone over 150 yards in two of those contests.

K.C. has been on the cusp of ripping off some long runs over the last couple of weeks, and this could be the game it finally happens. The Commanders are allowing 126 rushing yards per game this season, and will be without star defensive end Dorance Armstrong in this matchup.

Forcing interceptions

The missing ingredient for the Chiefs' defense has been getting interceptions. It has recorded just four on the season, and hasn't snagged one since Week 5. K.C. has forced just seven turnovers total, tied for the fifth-lowest amount in the league.

With Mariota under center for this matchup, this is a golden opportunity to pick off some passes. Mariota has thrown two in limited action this year, and has a history of throwing many of them when he is a starter.
