The Kansas City Chiefs have called Arrowhead Stadium home since 1972. The facility - which is the oldest in the entire AFC - sits on the Missouri side of the Kansas/Missouri state line that cuts through the city.

The Chiefs' lease on Arrowhead ends in 2031, and with the need for something fresh, Kansas lawmakers are desperate for the franchise to move to the west side of town. There is reportedly an offer on the table for a $3 billion domed stadium to be built across the border.

This option may be a less timely and more expensive solution, but it satisfies Chiefs owner Clark Hunt's ambition to host a Super Bowl - whether the Chiefs play in it or not - with this state-of-the-art facility.

Although the Chiefs have Arrowhead for another seven years, the clock is ticking on a decision to accept the new stadium offer.

Kansas House of Representatives speaker Dan Hawkins reports that each franchise has until the end of this month to make a decision, or the offer is revoked. He remains confident something will work out in his favor.

“I think if they want to get it done, they’ve still got time to get it done,” he told the Kansas City Star.

The year 2031 is also the year MLB's Kansas City Royals lose their rights to Kauffman Stadium - which is next-door neighbors with Arrowhead. Kansas is hoping to grab both teams if they can.

“If one of them wants to — or both — wants to come to Kansas, we’d love to have them. We have the tools," Hawkins added.

Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce, who will undoubtedly be retired by this point, has spoken out about a potential move into Kansas territory.

“Arrowhead is home for me,” Kelce said. “It’s a part of my heart, playing in that stadium.

"But the fans want what the fans want. We play for them. I think it’s up to them.”

The Chiefs are obviously a major draw in the NFL market, but the Hunt family is taking its time in making this decision.

"Both options are very much in play,” Hunt said via The Athletic. “Really, our timeline is driven more by having enough time to do the renovation work or the construction so that we can be in the new or renovated building in the summer of 2031.

"To really comfortably stay on schedule, it would be best to have some direction by the summer.”

Now here we are. The Chiefs are officially on the clock with June 30 circled in red.
