Kenny Pickett gets no 'varsity action' for Steelers. Is the job Mitch Trubisky's?

Rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett wasn't given "varsity action" in the Steelers' final dress rehearsal, a 19-9 preseason win Sunday over Detroit at Acrisure Stadium.

Veteran Mitch Trubisky took every snap with the starters, who played the entire first half. Trubisky went 15-for-19 for 160 yards and a touchdown pass to Steven Sims Jr. Starting running back Najee Harris, who's dealing with a Lisfranc sprain, per Pro Football Talk, made his preseason debut.

Coming into the final week of the preseason, the door appeared open for Pickett to win the starting job.

“A lot of spots are going to come down to this work,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told reporters last week when asked about the quarterback battle.

Trubisky moved the offense well despite a penalty-ridden struggle by the offensive line, which played poorly throughout the preseason. The Steelers scored 16 of their 19 points with the veteran under center.

Pickett played 27 plays in the second half, throwing for 90 yards on 10 of 14 completions. He led the team to just three points, but was on the field with almost all backups. He threaded the needle on this pass.

Pickett was never given a chance in what Tomlin considers “varsity action.”

After the game Tomlin, asked if he had his starting quarterback for Week 1, told reporters, including WPXI’s Jenna Harner: “I might, but you guys aren’t going to have it today.”
