Kenny Pickett was listed as third quarterback due to 'clerical error'

When the Pittsburgh Steelers released their initial depth chart for the 2022 season on Monday there was one expected move and one major surprise at the quarterback position.

The expected move: Mitch Trubisky was listed as the starting quarterback on the depth chart.

The unexpected move: First-round pick Kenny Pickett was listed as third-string behind veteran Mason Rudolph, despite Pickett getting second team reps over the final few weeks of training camp and the preseason, and playing extremely well in those situations.

On Tuesday, the Steelers made a slight change to that order with a NEW depth chart that had Pickett listed as the second-string quarterback behind Trubisky.

Tomlin confirmed at his Tuesday press conference that Pickett is indeed the backup quarterback, citing his competitive spirit, pinpoint accuracy and the way he continued to grow once he got into stadiums.

So why the change in the depth chart in 24 hours? The initial depth chart was a clerical error according to Tomlin, and that Pickett will take all second team reps in practice this week.

In the time between the public changes, though, there was chaos on the Steelers portion of Twitter over the initial depth chart.

While it might not seem like a huge deal, there is some significance to who the backup is on game days. Pickett being second obviously means that he is next in line if Trubisky gets injured or is ineffective. If the coaching staff did not have at least that amount of trust in him as a 24-year-old rookie it would have been a pretty significant development. Ken
