Kenyon Sadiq Wins Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Kenyon Sadiq gave Jets fans something to smile about in the loss to Detroit, and now he has an award to show for it. The rookie tight end was voted the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for Week 3, the Jets announced Thursday. He caught seven passes for 105 yards and a touchdown against the Lions, the biggest receiving day of his young NFL career.

Sadiq got on the board with a 24-yard touchdown catch from Geno Smith in the second quarter. Later, as the Jets tried to rally from a 14-point deficit, he turned another pass into a 43-yard gain, with 21 of those yards coming after the catch. The Jets lost 31-24, but Sadiq gave the offense a big-play option throughout the afternoon.

According to the Jets, Sadiq is the first rookie tight end in team history, and just the fourth rookie pass catcher, to put up at least seven receptions, 105 receiving yards and a touchdown in one game. He is also the first Jets rookie tight end to reach 100 receiving yards in a game since 2008. That is quite a way for the first-round pick out of Oregon to introduce himself.

Through three games, Sadiq has 12 catches for 143 yards and a receiving touchdown. He also scored on a 3-yard end-around against Tennessee in the season opener, making him one of just two rookie tight ends in NFL history, along with Ozzie Newsome, to score both a rushing and receiving touchdown in his first three games. The award recognizes one afternoon, but the Jets have already seen more than one way he can help their offense.
