Kevin Dyson speaks for Titans fans everywhere reliving painful New Orleans Super Bowl memory
USA TODAY Sports

Former wide receiver Kevin Dyson and the 13-3 Tennessee Titans went to Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta 25 years ago. In their first full season under the franchise's new name, Dyson and the Titans made it to the NFL's final game.

With three seconds left Dyson caught a pass from then quarterback Steve McNair, but was tackled one yard short of a potential game-tying score.

Kevin Dyson's moment is still painful for Titans fans

The St. Louis Rams went on to win 23-16 that Super Bowl.

"Wow, man," Dyson said in an interview with ESPN. "It still don't get any easier watching it. That's for sure. I thought after 25 years that I was over it, but that one's still rough, bro!"

Tennessee went 13-3 again in that following season, but lost in the 2000 AFC Divisional Round. The Titans have experienced relative levels of success in the quarter of a century that has passed since the club's only Super Bowl appearance. Only twice (2002, 2019) has Tennessee even been able to make it back to the Conference Championship game.

Coming off of a 3-14 campaign, this current Titans club is facing the start of a critical rebuild ahead of 2025.

No one expects Tennessee to be competing for a World Championship next February. Using this year's No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft to either draft a game-changer or provide additional picks via a trade will be critical in jump-starting that process. Every team that makes the Super Bowl and loses has the feeling that they'll be able to make it back in the not-too-distant future.

"I think I've used (that moment) as a life lesson now," Dyson said.
