Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy began the 2025 NFL season as the team's starting quarterback before he suffered a right high ankle sprain during the Vikings' Week 2 matchup against the Chicago Bears.

McCarthy finished the game and helped the Vikings win their first game of the year over the Bears, 27-24, finishing with 143 yards through the air, two touchdowns, and one interception.

He has been out of the lineup for the last three games, but his return could be coming in short order.

As reported by CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell told the media on Wednesday that he will get reps in practice alongside backup quarterback Carson Wentz this week.

"Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell made no bold proclamations about QB J.J. McCarthy today, simply saying he will get reps in practice along with Carson Wentz today and this week," wrote Jones.

McCarthy is 1-1 as a starting quarterback and has compiled 301 yards through the air, two touchdowns, and three interceptions in his two starts this year. Wentz has filled in admirably since McCarthy went down, leading the Vikings to two wins and a 3-2 record overall. He has compiled 759 yards through the air, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.

This is Wentz's first season with the Vikings after spending the 2024 season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was Patrick Mahomes' backup and played in only three games. Before that, he had stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders, Indianapolis Colts, and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Vikings' last win came over the Cleveland Browns on October 5, 21-17. They had their bye week this past week and are set to play the Eagles at home this Sunday.

This is a big game for both teams, as the Vikings try to stay in the race for a wild-card spot while the Eagles aim to keep their lead in the NFC East.

Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. ET on Fox.
