The Cleveland Browns came out of the bye week and fell to the New York Jets — and they have two special teams touchdowns to blame as the main reason why. Cleveland gave up just 10 points on defense, and their offense reached 20 points for just the second time this season in the 27-20 loss to New York.
Cleveland’s defense allowed a couple of scoring drives in the second half, but it’s hard to pin the loss on them when they surrendered only 169 total yards. Interestingly enough, the Browns’ best defender on Sunday was a player who was once considered a longshot to even suit up.
Before the bye week, the Browns faced a real setback when their standout rookie linebacker exited the game with an ankle injury. Not only did the New England Patriots blow out Cleveland in Week 9, but it also appeared the Browns had lost their young defensive star for several weeks. Multiple reports indicated Schwesinger could miss around four games with the injury. Thanks to the timing of the bye week, however, he was back on the field two weeks later without missing any game action.
“He has Wolverine blood, I believe is what it says,” Stefanski said of Schwesinger on Monday. “The kid’s playing at an extremely high level. For him to come back from that injury and perform like he did, it was incredible to watch. And really, throughout that bye week, he just kept getting better and better, and you felt like there’d be a chance of him playing.
“So listen, I haven’t looked around the league at how other guys are playing or anything like that, but I’d be hard-pressed to believe there’s a rookie defensive player performing better than him. And when you factor in what he came back from, it’s pretty remarkable.”

Stefanski doesn’t often heap praise on young players like that, so his comments say a lot about just how good Cleveland’s top linebacker has been. It may have been a surprise to some when the Browns drafted Schwesinger at the top of the second round, but it’s proven to be a brilliant move by GM Andrew Berry. Schwesinger recorded nine tackles and a half-sack against the Jets, flying around the field and making his presence felt. The No. 33 overall pick’s name is now being mentioned heavily in the Defensive Rookie of the Year conversation — and for good reason. He’s up to 69 tackles on the season, along with 1.5 sacks and an interception. While Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah’s absence has been tough for Cleveland, Schwesinger has done everything possible to fill that void.
Schwesinger leads the Browns in tackles and has quietly been one of the better linebackers in football this season, playing at a Pro Bowl level. If he continues to perform at this pace, there’s little doubt he’ll be adding some postseason accolades to his young NFL résumé.
