Counting the injured Deshaun Watson, the Cleveland Browns currently have five quarterbacks on the roster. The team surprised many by selecting Dillon Gabriel in the third round of the recent draft, then capitalized on the value of Shedeur Sanders by picking him in the fifth round. Earlier in the offseason, the Browns traded for Kenny Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles and also signed veteran QB Joe Flacco before the draft.

These four quarterbacks are expected to handle the offense in various capacities this season while Watson recovers from his Achilles injury. He re-injured the Achilles he originally hurt against the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2024 season—an injury that required surgery.

Kevin Stefanski Provides Update on Deshaun Watson

With rookie minicamp taking place over the weekend, the media had two opportunities to speak with head coach Kevin Stefanski. Naturally, an update on Watson’s status was provided.

“Yeah, he’s working really hard,” Stefanski said of Watson. “Doing a nice job in his rehab. Doing a great job in the meeting room as well.”

Watson has remained in Northeast Ohio recently, continuing his rehab and working his way back from what is a difficult injury. The former Pro Bowl quarterback started seven games last season before getting hurt. In total, Watson has made 19 starts over three seasons with the Browns.

While Watson is under contract through the 2026 season, the Browns could choose to move on after this year and absorb the dead money. That decision will come in time. With two first-round picks next season, Cleveland needs to see how the current quarterback situation develops. Regardless, it seems the Browns have moved past the Watson era and acknowledged that the move didn’t work out as hoped.

Watson remains on the roster with a fully guaranteed contract that has influenced the team’s roster decisions. It’s a positive sign for the former Clemson star that he’s making progress from another significant injury.
