The minicamp runs from June 16 to June 18, 2026, and the Dallas Cowboys are beginning to reveal what their 2026 roster could look like. Organized Team Activities (OTAs) have offered an early glimpse into the team’s preparation for the upcoming season.

Reporters Nick Harris and Cal Philips of Star-Telegram discussed the takeaways from the Cowboys’ OTAs and what those developments could mean as the team moves into mandatory minicamp.

Several storylines have emerged, including the backup quarterback competition, defensive changes, rookie development, and the status of key veterans.

George Pickens is expected to be a major part of Dallas’ offense in 2026. His “uhhh” response with a shrug when asked about his attendance during the mandatory minicamp before his agent cut off the conversation is concerning. However, amidst contract extension uncertainty, the franchise confirms that their communication with Pickens is strong.

The Cowboys also continue to evaluate the backup quarterback position. Joe Milton III and Sam Howell are sharing reps behind Dak Prescott, creating one of the intriguing competitions on the roster, according to the Star-Telegram.

The veteran cornerback Cobie Durant made a diving interception on the first play of 7-on-7 work against Prescott. The rookie first-round pick, Caleb Downs, and linebacker Dee Winters also drew attention with their reps.

After retiring in 2025, former Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith showed up at the Cowboys facility in Frisco to help out with offensive line development. He guided left tackle Tyler Guyton, who already idolizes him and has a similar frame to the veteran.

“The gold jacket can show up when he wants,” Guyton said of Smith. “It’s whatever day he wants. He gives us stuff to work on. He’s a big help for us on the offensive line. His presence in our room and on the field with us is incredible.”

Guyton was drafted in 2024 and is now entering his third year while battling against Nate Thomas for the left tackle position. He was supposed to be a long-term solution, but didn’t work as expected.

Downs, the rookie, defeated Prescott and Will Grier on the golf course. “A true young pro,” Prescott appreciated as he beat them on the grass. He also tried getting the perspective of the offense while preparing his own defense.

With minicamp around the corner, the Cowboys will get a clear picture of their roster, and every competition will become more significant.

George Pickens’ Absence Opens the Door For Marquez Valdes-Scantling at Cowboys OTAs

With Pickens absent from OTAs, newly signed wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling from the Pittsburgh Steelers benefited from the opportunities with the Cowboys’ first-team offense.

“It might just be because wide receiver George Pickens isn’t in attendance for OTAs, but recent free agent signing Marquez Valdes-Scantling picked up a lot of work with the first team Thursday,” wrote Harris via the Star-Telegram on June 4.

The receiver saw multiple targets from Prescott on June 4th’s practice and showed his reliability on the play when he protected an interception by knocking down an off-target throw.

The veteran receiver stood out both physically and in performance as he continued to bond with Prescott.
