Kirk Cousins comments on Falcons tampering case

The Falcons and Kirk Cousins tampering saga reached a climax right before the draft when some pundits suggested it could have an impact on the Falcons 8th overall pick. That didn’t end up happening, and to this date, there still has yet to be a resolution. Most likely, the Falcons will receive some sort of punishment that could result in a fine and affect next year’s draft selections, because Cousins did blatantly admit to tampering in his opening press conference after signing with Atlanta.

This is what could have the Falcons in hot water with the NFL in terms of tampering.

The reality is tampering might be the dumbest rule in the National Football League. It is ignored by the entire league and almost never results in any type of punishment. However, this is a case where it’s so obviously been admitted, that the NFL almost has to do something about it.

The Falcons tampering with Kirk Cousins didn’t have any effect on his decision. As Cousins put it today at OTAs, if something illegal happened, it was nothing but innocent conversations.

If anything, it expedited the process. Cousins signed with the Falcons because they offered more years, more total money, and more guarantees. End of story. The punishment must fit the crime, and the crime was harmless. I don’t expect anything much to come of this investigation other than a fine and perhaps a swap of draft picks on Day 2 or 3 of next year’s draft.
