Kirk Cousins reportedly set to give Vikings massive update ahead of free agency

Many Minnesota Vikings fans wonder whether quarterback Kirk Cousins will explore free agency this offseason, and they should have an answer soon.

Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis, the organization expects to hear from Cousins on Sunday night. His contract does not void until Wednesday, meaning the Vikings will have some time to extend him before his dead cap counts toward their 2024 salary cap.

According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, Minnesota and Cousins are still talking to each other but haven't reached a compromise on a new deal. It's worth noting that his last two contracts have been fully guaranteed, something the organization might not be willing to do again.

If Cousins becomes a free agent, don't be surprised if he signs with the Atlanta Falcons. According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, he's thinking about moving his family to Atlanta, and his wife, Julie, is a Georgia native. Plus, the Falcons have $41.23M in cap room, enough to sign a franchise quarterback.

Losing Cousins wouldn't be ideal for the Vikings, but they're in a decent position if they have to rebuild. Minnesota has the 11th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft in a deep QB class.

According to Tankathon, it'll take Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, who led the Wolverines to their first national championship in 26 years.

Cousins turns 36 before the beginning of the next season and suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in 2023. While he's a four-time Pro Bowler, the Vikings probably don't want to exceed a certain price for an aging signal-caller who only has one playoff win in six seasons in Minnesota.
