Kirk Cousins reveals he relied on a higher power after Falcons’ shocking decision to draft QB Michael Penix in the draft
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons have much-needed hype surrounding the team for the first time since 2017. The team has had a rough time finding the successor to Matt Ryan, but this off-season, they struck gold by signing Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins to a whopping four-year, $180 million deal.

The notion amongst the fanbase heading into the draft was that since the team had filled up the QB spot, the team would focus on drafting other weapons to help him on the field.

However, that was not what happened. The Atlanta Falcons did the most unexpected thing; fans of the team were probably not this confused since the team’s 2017 Super Bowl loss. The team decided to draft Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington as another quarterback. In a decision that had owner Arthur Blank speechless, the team used its first-round pick to bring aboard a playmaker.

Kirk Cousins was equally shocked as the team’s fanbase, if not more. He described to NFL Media that he felt “shocked” and “disappointed” with this.

On the face of it, the decision did not make sense, and the initial thought process was that the Falcons would keep Cousins for a year or two and groom Penix so he could be ready as the veteran nears the end of his existing contract. Understanding that this was beyond his control, Cousins turned to a higher power during this uncertainty.

With the Falcons drafting a QB, out of nowhere, just three or four weeks ago, I was reminded again, Proverbs 3:5-6. I'm going to trust the Lord, and he'll lead. Kirk Cousins said

It was the most sensible thing to do. The quarterback, who is religious, is leaving it to the will of God and is focused on simply doing his part.

Kirk Cousins understands the NFL is a business and nobody’s job is safe

Ultimately, he has no say with respect to roster decisions, that is up to the ownership and the GM. Cousins recognizes that as a player, all he can do is continue to show up and perform.

I think you're reminded again that there are things you control, and there's a lot of things you don't control. So let's deal in reality and recognize that fact, and then be a steward, not an owner. I just believe that I gotta steward what comes my way and control what I can control On the Bussin With The Boys podcast, Cousins revealed to Taylor Lewan and Will Compton

The quarterback is coming off an Achilles injury. In a season where he was on track to having an MVP-caliber year, the injury derailed his career and was likely a key factor in the Vikings decision to move on from him.

For now, Kirk Cousins is not sweating what the future holds, for that is beyond his control. He has begun to practice alongside Michael Penix and is building chemistry with his new teammates in Atlanta.

The new-look Falcons will be an exciting team to watch this season, but the ultimate goal that the franchise is focused on is returning to the Super Bowl.
