One week ago today beloved college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit announced the passing of his golden retriever, Ben.
"This is really hard to write but so many of you have loved and cared about Ben that I wanted to let you know. We found out today the cancer had spread throughout Bens organs and there was nothing left we could do-we had to let him go. I’ve had dogs my whole life but Ben was 1 on 1," Herbstreit said in an emotional post on social media.
"He was smart-loving-gentle-patient-inquisitive-and welcoming to all. Always a big smile and a soft tail wag. He and I could communicate..he and I understood each other and had each others backs. He was with me more than anyone at home and traveling with me for work. Such an easy going companion. Hard day-but he will live within all of us forever. God please bless his majestic soul and thank you for putting him in my life for the last 10 years-a true blessing. Love you Ben."
With Ben gone, Herbstreit has a new travel companion. Ben's younger brother, Peter, is with the 'Thursday Night Football' color analyst ahead of tonight's game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.
"Yes Peter is with me this week. See how he does," Herbstreit said to a fan who asked if the young pup was going on the road. Herbie's comment drew a reaction from legendary college basketball analyst Dick Vitale.
"Yes Kirk Peter will do a super job - Goldens so special - our family has had 3 - THEO & DOMER (yes after Golden Dome) passed but now we have ROGER (named after Roger Federer). The LOVE u showed BEN inspired many & brought back many memories to our family. God Bless buddy!" Vitale said.
Herbstreit sent an equally classy message to Vitale, who announced in June he was diagnosed with cancer for a fourth time.
"Thanks so much Dickie V. Appreciate you sharing your love for your dogs as well. Hope you’re feeling well. All the best," he said.
Classy moves from both men.
