Maxx Crosby has been the topic around the Raiders all week. New head coach Klint Kubiak did not dodge it Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine.
“It’s a guy that we want, really want on our team. As simple as that. We want Max. We want Max to be a Raider,” Kubiak said.
Kubiak said his early interactions with Crosby have been “very positive” and he is “really excited” about working with him this year.
The head coach label changes the scope, not the assignment. Kubiak said the combine is about learning players and aligning with general manager John Spytek on what this roster needs.
Days have been spent reviewing last season’s Raiders tape, studying individual players and digging into free agents. Nights have been for the draft.

Kubiak said Spytek and former Raiders defensive coordinator Joe Woods spoke highly of Rob Leonard, but the interview closed the deal. He said Leonard showed knowledge, a clear plan and a clear idea of the types of players required.
On scheme, Kubiak said the Raiders will start as a base 3-4 team and still be able to play four-down fronts. He expects Leonard to be multiple, then adapt as the roster changes through free agency and the draft.
The quarterback plan is still being built, and Kubiak said “all options” are on the table. Geno Smith is one of them.
Kubiak said he has spoken with Smith briefly since taking the job and is now working through the tape and the bigger offseason picture at the position.
Rick Dennison’s hiring as offensive line coach was a major point of emphasis. Kubiak called Dennison a phenomenal teacher and said he wants a line that is smart, hard-nosed and dependable.
Jackson Powers-Johnson fits what the staff is looking for, too. Kubiak called him versatile at guard and center and said where he lines up “is to be seen.”
He also flagged JPJ’s physical edge, pointing to the Chicago game and praising his mentality of playing “through the echo of the whistle.”
Kubiak said the traits he is looking for in a quarterback are decision-making, timing and accuracy. He said that standard applies regardless of draft slot.
He also said the Raiders are keeping “all options” on the table at quarterback, with Geno Smith included. Kubiak said he has spoken with Smith “very briefly” since being hired and is continuing to work through tape as the staff evaluates its options.
Kubiak called Ashton Genty a three-down back and “a major building block” of the offense. He said the Raiders will look for a second back to share the load and would consider adding a fullback if the right player is available.
On Trey Tucker, Kubiak said toughness and unselfish play jumped out, including blocking work and availability.
The theme across Wednesday’s session was direct. The Raiders want Maxx Crosby to be a Raider, and the new staff is moving quickly to define how this team will look in 2026.
