Kurt Warner addresses Giants' Tommy DeVito becoming a rookie sensation

Hall of Famer Kurt Warner is widely considered the greatest undrafted free agent in NFL history and, thus, knows a thing or two about what New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito is experiencing this fall.

"There are a lot of guys who get here [to the NFL] and don’t have the opportunities but they know how to play football," Warner said about DeVito while speaking with Tom Rock of Newsday. "It’s cool when you see them get opportunities and rise up."

Warner called the "Monday Night Football" game between the Giants and Green Bay Packers from the Westwood One Sports radio booth and watched as DeVito completed 17-of-21 passes for 158 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the come-from-behind 24-22 victory over Green Bay.

"He battled and made plays," Warner said about the 25-year-old who also rushed for 71 yards on 10 carries. "I think what becomes such a huge part of this business while you learn to play the position is do guys rally around you and do you make plays in the moment. That’s really what it was [on Monday]. It wasn’t necessarily beautiful across the board in every facet but when they needed him to make plays, whether it was a scramble to set up the touchdown or more importantly the last drive, he stepped up and made plays for them."

Michael Eisen of the Giants' website pointed out that DeVito connected on four-of-four passes for 53 yards on the game's final drive that ended with Randy Bullock converting a walk-off 37-yard field goal. The undrafted first-year pro is now 3-1 as a starter and has notched three consecutive victories for the 5-8 Giants heading into this Sunday's game at the 6-7 New Orleans Saints.

Some excited fans likely can't help but wonder if DeVito could be a long-term replacement for Week 1 starter Daniel Jones after Jones suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5. Warner suggested such individuals should pump the brakes before they anoint DeVito as a franchise savior.

"For me, I think you always have to have at least a full season," Warner explained. "Anything short of a full season it’s going to be, 'OK, we need to see a little bit more.' That’s how I always gauge it."

As of Tuesday afternoon, the ESPN Football Power Index gave the DeVito-led Giants only a 0.4% chance to make the playoffs. A New York win at Caesars Superdome this Sunday could make the Christmas Day game between the Giants and a Philadelphia Eagles (10-3) side that's no longer atop the NFC East standings quite the fascinating matchup for multiple reasons.
