Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera does not want to make another change at quarterback if he can avoid it.
As John Keim explained for ESPN, Rivera told reporters on Monday that Kyle Allen will remain his starting-signal caller for Sunday's game against the winless New York Giants as long as Allen is healthy and cleared to play.
"He's our starter," Rivera said of Allen.
Allen suffered an arm injury during Sunday's 30-10 home loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The 24-year-old was also rocked and checked for a concussion during the game. Before being sidelined, he hit on nine of 13 throws for 74 yards against Los Angeles. Allen also tallied a rushing score in the first quarter.
"He delivered a good ball for the most part," Rivera explained. "He managed well. We'll see how things go if he's healthy."
Veteran Alex Smith, who made a triumphant and emotional return from the horrific leg injury he suffered in November 2018, completed nine of 17 passes for 37 yards in the loss to the Rams. Smith was also sacked six times.
Allen replaced 2019 first-round draft pick Dwayne Haskins, who was relegated to third on the depth chart behind Smith following the Oct. 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Haskins was dead last in total QBR at the time of his benching.
"By no means have I given up on him," Rivera said about Haskins on Friday.
