Kyle Shanahan on Jimmy G.'s possible offseason departure: 'That's the last thing on my mind'

Soon after the Los Angeles Rams' 20-17 NFC Championship Game victory on Sunday, much of San Francisco 49ers nation immediately started speculated on the future of starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. However, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't one of those people.

Even though Garoppolo was obviously vital to helping San Francisco get to the doorstep of its second Super Bowl in three years, many NFL fans and experts alike see the 30-year-old as a likely candidate to leave the franchise in the offseason. After all, the organization used the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on intriguing quarterback Trey Lance who offers the youth (21 years old) and running ability (38 attempts, 168 rushing yards, one touchdown) that Jimmy G. doesn't.

Garoppolo had the same number of rushing attempts as Lance during the season, but they went for just 51 yards (though kneel downs have to be considered). In 63 career games, including 47 starts, the former New England Patriots signal-caller has produced just 192 rushing yards on 142 attempts.

Through the air, Garoppolo went 301-for-441 (68.3%) for 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 regular-season games. In six games (including two starts) in 2021, Lance finished 41-for-71 (57.7%) with 603 passing yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.
