L.A. Agrees To Terms With Quarterback Brett Rypien

The Los Angeles Rams announced they agreed to terms with quarterback Brett Rypien in free agency on Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Rams now have four quarterbacks signed to the roster heading into training camp. Those four include starter Matthew Stafford, fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett, undrafted free agent Dresser Winn and Rypien.

A former undrafted free agent himself, Rypien has spent the past four seasons with the Denver Broncos backing up their carousel of quarterbacks. The Boise State product didn’t see much action at the NFL level until the 2022 season where he appeared in four games in place of Russell Wilson who dealt with a hamstring injury and later concussion protocol. In the four games he appeared in for the Broncos, Rypien recorded 483 yards for two touchdowns but was intercepted four times.

Prior to 2022, Rypien appeared in eight games for the Broncos where he threw for 778 yards and four touchdowns.

Going into training camp, Rypien will have a chance to earn a roster spot though it seems unlikely he makes the team as the Rams appear high on Bennett after using an early Day 3 pick on him. With training camp rosters set at 90 players, Rypien is likely being brought in as an extra arm to help facilitate drills and get players reps ahead of the 2023 campaign.

However, should Bennett fall short of expectations, then Rypien will have every opportunity to claim the backup quarterback spot behind Stafford. Although he hasn’t shown much at the professional level, Rypien makes for a fine No. 2 on a Los Angeles roster that is thin and lacking talent on paper.

Outside of the presumed starters, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Rams as they’ll be using the next few months to determine which rookies and young players will be part of their team going forward. Rypien is a small piece to that possible and while it would be unfair to expect much out of him he very well could be in the mix for a roster spot during the summer.

Stetson Bennett excited to learn after being drafted by Rams

As a two-time NCAA champion, Bennett’s certainly got the resume and pedigree to succeed at the NFL level. Though teams were concerned about his size and off-the-field issues, Bennett is solid throwing the football and making reads in distress.

Coming to L.A. and working under brilliant minds like Sean McVay is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Bennett and he has already expressed how excited he is to learn.
