LaDainian Tomlinson: Cowboys rookie will be a matchup nightmare

Darren Sproles may have been small in stature, but he made a big impact on the game as both a weapon out of the backfield and in the return game.

So it should come as no surprise that many have compared Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Deuce Vaughn, who is also from Kansas State and is also under 5-foot-6, to Sproles.

That includes former NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson, who says the sixth-round pick is not only made in the same mold as the former three-time Pro Bowler, but he can also be a matchup nightmare much like Sproles was.

“I think this could be a matchup nightmare out the backfield,” Tomlinson said, via NFL Network. “A lot of people are comparing him to Darren Sproles, who was one of the best ever coming out the backfield, running routes, creating mismatches. I see Deuce Vaughn in the same light. There’s no way you’re going to stop him one-on-one from running option routes. You can also bring him out the backfield, put him on the perimeter. He’s as quick as a gnat and I’m telling you right now, the Cowboys will find a place and find a way to utilize Deuce Vaughn’s skills.”

At Kansas State, Sproles amassed a school record 5,588 total yards from scrimmage and accounted for 47 total touchdowns over 45 games, while Vaughn totaled 4,884 yards from scrimmage (second-most in school history) and 43 total touchdowns across 37 games. The duo also rank No. 1 and 2, respectively, in career rushing yards and career touchdowns.

While Sproles was the more decorated runner, Vaughn is the more accomplished receiver. He averaged 38 receptions per season and 11 yards per reception, making him an invaluable option out of the backfield in the passing game. Last season, Tony Pollard was the only Cowboys running back with more than 20 receptions and 100 receiving yards.

With Pollard’s status for next season still unknown (he fractured his fibula in the playoffs in January), Vaughn could see substantial playing time in Dallas’ running back rotation that also features Ronald Jones and Malik Davis.
