Lamar Jackson explains why he made the questionable decision that could backfire on the Ravens
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

One major storyline as of late for the Baltimore Ravens has been the decision to lose weight by QB Lamar Jackson.

Jackson played at 215 pounds last season and is down to as low as 205 right now, according to Dianna Russini. Immediately, the worry that pops into anyone’s head is injury concerns with him being lighter and how much he runs. Though Jackson did not specify how much weight he’s lost during his media availability on Wednesday, he did explain his reasoning to do it.

"I don't really know how many pounds I lost. I'm like two-something [pounds] right now, but I'll say it was important enough to be able to move around a little bit extra, that's all,” Jackson told the media on Day 2 of OTAs.

It sounds as if Jackson and the Ravens want him to become even more dynamic and even more agile when he is running the football. That is scary for opposing defenses around the NFL because Jackson already has over 5,200 rushing yards in six seasons played. The All-Pro quarterback has crossed 1,000 yards twice and had 821 with five touchdowns last year.

"I feel great. It feels great to be out here with my guys, grinding and getting better. I feel great."

When it comes to the worry of injury being sustained at a lighter weight, Jackson isn’t really worried about it. Perhaps for good reason because since entering the NFL, he has been good about avoiding the big hit. With that being said, Jackson has missed games in every season since he was a rookie, as well as multiple in 2021 and 2022.

"We sacrifice our body each and every game [and] practices. I believe it really doesn't matter about the weight."

The Ravens took a step forward last season by getting back to the AFC Championship game, but it is going to take an even bigger push to get to where they want to be, which is the Super Bowl. Just maybe an even more rare version of Jackson is the recipe they need to get there, he is certainly going to try.
