Larry Fitzgerald hopes Kenny Pickett wins Steelers' starting job

Future Hall of Fame wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald didn't play during the 2021 NFL season and is presumably retired. Before Fitzgerald became a household name and an Arizona Cardinals legend, he displayed his skills featuring for the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Fellow Pitt alum and quarterback Kenny Pickett was able to stay in the Steel City when the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the first round of this year's draft. Per Justin McGonigle of Steeler Nation, Fitzgerald spoke about Pittsburgh's quarterback situation during an appearance at the American Century Championship golf tournament at Lake Tahoe. 

Free-agent signing Mitchell Trubisky is widely viewed as the favorite to be Pittsburgh's QB1 for Week 1 in September over Pickett and backup Mason Rudolph, but Fitzgerald made it clear he's rooting for the rookie to earn the gig during training camp and the preseason. 

"I’m real excited for Kenny [Pickett] and what he’s going to be able to do with the Pittsburgh Steelers," Fitzgerald explained during a discussion with Pittsburgh's Channel 11 WPXI. "I hope he’s going to win that job and go out there and perform the way he’s been performing. He’s familiar with the practice facilities, has produced in a large way at Heinz Field, so there’s a lot of familiarity with him and I know the city’s going to get behind him." 

Pickett spent springtime workouts third on the depth chart behind Trubisky and Rudolph, and the first-year pro seemingly has little chance of leapfrogging the two, barring injuries, between now and Sept. 11.
