It's safe to say that one of the greatest NFL defenses of all time is the Legion of Boom, the defense that the Seattle Seahawks put out on the field during their Super Bowl wins and runs under Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll.
There are some other defenses you could throw in there, like the No Fly Zone that the Denver Broncos had during their Super Bowl runs, the Raiders' defenses they had in the 80s were pretty nasty, and even the late 90s, too. There are so many good ones, but almost everyone knows about the Legion of Boom, and maybe it's because of how unique it was.
The Seahawks had big, long, and fast defensive backs who were not afraid to lay the wood on some people, and you saw some of the hardest hits of all time during that era. Guys like Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor held it down in the back end. All were Pro Bowl-caliber defensive backs because of how well the defense played together.
And, all fit a stereotype that Carroll loves. They are long cornerbacks with lanky frames that are also very fast and usually taller than the average height at their position. We saw Carroll draft some guys like that, specifically Iowa State CB and Raiders rookie Darien Porter.
Now, Carroll is only doing what he's known to work, and what he has seen work. The Raiders are trying to mimic some of that success in the back end.
"I had the opportunity to watch that and study that defense for years, and to be a part of seeing how Pete [Carroll] built that Legion of Boom, it's really interesting," Raiders DB coach Marcus Robertson told reporters in a media scrum earlier this offseason. "I'm up for the challenge, and I'm hoping that we can mimic to a certain degree some of the success that they had in their secondary. You can feel the culture changing around. I take my hat off to Pete Carroll. He's doing an amazing job."

The Raiders have had pretty good defenses the last few years, and the offense has been the one thing to really hold them back. But with an improved offense, the defense could have a pretty good year. However, the defense is extremely young and does look significantly different this year than it did last year.
This could call for guys like Porter to play huge roles on the defense in 2025. And that could spark some similarities that we see on the field, of the old Legion of Boom.
