Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce reveals which QB will start with the bulk of first-team reps
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Despite not securing a rookie quarterback in the draft, a move they had anticipated, the Raiders are still in a promising position with two quarterbacks who they believe can lead them to victory in 2024. Aidan O'Connell, a fourth-round rookie last year, performed as expected. Minshew, on the other hand, came close to guiding his team to the playoffs. The upcoming offseason will be crucial as Pierce closely observes the competition between the two.

Here's the deal: The Raiders have an amazing roster around their quarterbacks. They addressed every need they had - besides QB - and built an even better roster than the one they had last season, which saw them nearly make the playoffs.

But even with Gardner Minshew's free-agent addition, the Raiders still have to decide who will be the quarterback to start the year. They will use the offseason, including minicamps, practices, training camps, etc., to determine who is worthy.

But for now, Antonio Pierce has already told us who will get the first snaps of practice.

"What Aidan [O'Connell] did the last four games and from what he's done this offseason – changing his body, his work ethic, being here every day, blocking out the outside noise, not worried about anything, I'm excited... Aidan has already taken the bull by the horns and is leading the way, and [Gardner] Minshew's doing it as well," head coach Antonio Pierce said.

"That's two guys that have played. And you saw them play against each other last year, and they went neck to neck. But I'm really excited to see what happens. I think it's going to be a process. We're going to stick to the process. But as I said before, Aidan's earned the right to go out there and get the first snap."

The Raiders are in a great position, whether fans feel like it or not. They can still surprise a ton of people in 2024. A big reason is the wild card, Aidan O'Connell. He's a wildcard because we seriously have no idea how he will be in 2024.

He finally has a full preseason to get work in rather than worrying about the draft and college. Now, he gets first-team reps or even second-team reps rather than third- or fourth-team reps like last offseason. And he completely changed his body and actually slimmed down massively. For all we know, he could be the next Tom BradyI mean, he did change his number to 12.
